Acoustic Performance

Architectural acoustics are essential in ensuring sounds are transmitted clearly and effectively – Our SIPs offer excellent acoustic performance.

Acoustic Performance and Design Flexibility

Architectural acoustics are essential for ensuring that sound is transmitted clearly and effectively within a building. Our Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are known for their superior acoustic properties, making them ideal for both residential and commercial applications. The sound insulation capabilities of SIPs can vary based on factors such as the system’s composition, the choice of external finishes, and the thickness of the insulating foam core.

We offer tailored guidance to help you choose the optimal system components to meet your specific acoustic requirements, ensuring the highest sound resistance for your project.

Acoustic Performance Standards and Building Regulations

Our Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) meet the rigorous acoustic standards set by BS EN ISO 140-3:1995, which governs the measurement of airborne sound insulation in buildings and building elements. This ensures that our SIPs deliver superior acoustic performance, making them ideal for projects that require high sound insulation.

Considerations for Sound Insulation

While national Building Regulations do not have specific sound insulation requirements for external walls, they do take into account the presence of significant external noise sources, such as highways, rail lines, or airports. In these cases, the surrounding noise levels influence the design and performance of external facades. Typically, the most significant sources of noise ingress come from window units and trickle ventilators.

For both internal and external walls, enhancing sound insulation often involves using multiple layers of acoustic-rated plasterboard. This method is widely recognised as an effective solution for improving sound resistance. In situations with specific acoustic challenges, we recommend working with an acoustic consultant to ensure the most appropriate system is selected to meet or exceed the necessary performance standards.

Meeting Acoustic Targets in Compliance with Building Regulations

In the UK, Building Regulations establish performance targets for airborne sound insulation, particularly for internal walls. These targets are defined by Airborne Sound Reduction (Rw) values, derived from laboratory testing. While there is no on-site testing required for most internal walls, separating, party, and compartment walls are subject to specific performance criteria and must pass pre-completion sound insulation testing to ensure compliance.

We provide comprehensive support to help navigate these regulations, offering expert guidance to meet the required acoustic performance standards. We assist with both internal and external wall systems, as well as floor constructions, ensuring that your project meets the necessary testing requirements and achieves optimal acoustic performance.
